At the center of the captivating rolling meadows, dwelt a young shepherd. His existence was mostly untarnished, simple, and honest. His main role was to care for his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the wind among the solo tree on the hilltop were his main companions. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
However, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. In one such instance because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plan.
Stories of wild beasts prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One morning he ran into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to help but found nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank continued for a few days more. Yet, one day, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy ran for website help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
